About Us

Bluegrass Echoes has been established since 1982. Starting its roots as a family band in the Detroit, Michigan area. Band practice for the first members was in the basement of the organizer J.R. Harrington’s home. One band member commented how nice the echo was in the basement. “What kind of echo?” was asked. “A bluegrass echo”, was the reply; so Bluegrass Echoes became the name for the new group.

Talk about unique, our first fiddler, Cannon was a left-handed fiddler. Asked how that happened, he committed that he learned to play by practicing in front of the mirror. Members have come and gone over the years, but one member has stood the test of time, that being J.R. Harrington and because of his longevity with the group, the group is often thought of as "J.R. and the Bluegrass Echoes."
The “Bluegrass Echoes Band” is a traditional bluegrass and gospel music group under the direction of band leader J.R. Harrington. The group has played in various venues: WMBMA Spring Festival in Lowell, MI; Salt River Bluegrass Festival in Oil City, MI, etc.

J.R.Harrington plays guitar and sings lead vocals. He has played bluegrass music for over 35 years and has written many songs including “Hills of Kentucky” and “Mountain Hobo.” He lives in White Cloud, MI. Tia Brown plays the upright bass and sings tenor. Tia and her husband, Larry Brown, who plays the five-string banjo, have been playing bluegrass music for several years. They live in White Cloud, MI. Ben Crofoot plays the mandolin and sings baritone for the band. He has a lot of years playing experience. He has played with the Apple Blossom Bluegrass Band. Twelve year-old Jesse Kent is the newest member of the band. He started playing fiddle at the age of seven, being home schooled he has lots of time to persue his interest in music.
